#1 Elliptical Mistake People Continue to Make

I hope you enjoyed yesterday’s post where we looked at the best form of cardio for burning fat.

Nacho Libre (picture on the right) is one of the most ridiculous movies ever made. It also happens to be one of my favourites. In it, Nacho (played by Jack Black) makes a number of “mistakes”, in pursuit of his dream, which initially cost him his position at the local monastery and get him into a some pretty hot water.

Luckily, he learns a powerful lesson that allows him to reach his goals…and YOU CAN TOO.

As promised, today I’m going to reveal the #1 mistake people continue to make while on the elliptical.

Ahh….this gets my blood boiling.

Hopefully, you can learn from other peoples’ mistakes, instead of committing this cardinal elliptical sin yourself.

Watch and enjoy…

Yuri, your so right, about this. I’ve been using gyms for 20 years or more, and I’ve seen the same things. I refer the gym to being my physiotherapy. I’m now 56 but as a 22 year old I nearly died in a bad motor bike accident. Broke both legs, the left one was a compound fracture, that severed the sciatic nerve, paralysing the leg from the knee down. The right humorous bone in my arm was fractured which severed the ulner nerve which supplies movement to the back of the fore arm and wrist elevation etc. Subsequent operations did give me back 90% mobility in the leg, and some reconstructive surgery gave me wrist elevation in the arm. What I’m getting around to saying, which you have pointed out so well, is a very basic flaw I’ve seen myself in gyms. Due to having to defer from high impact activities like running, I use the bike, for aerobics, and the cross trainer/elliptical. I’m from the UK, and the same mistakes are being made over here. When I leave the gym it’s like I’ve been in a monsoon, The steam can be seen rising off my head. Yes, when I get on that bike, I get into that zone, No to tv’s if you’ve got time to watch a tv in the gym, then your right, your wasting your time and money. What I have found interesting and helpful, is your analysis that the cross trainer/elliptical is the most efficient, using it the way you describe. Since I found your web site, I’ve found it informative and helpful. If a guy like me can come out of a gym on a high, and soaking wet, with my history and injuries, then I see no reason why everyone can’t. It’s attitude of mind, and wanting that fitness bad enough, you break into a sweat. Keep up the good work Yuri, and have a great holiday. Best wishes. Sean

I loved your comments on working out on the elliptical. I used to work at a Women’s gym and I remember feeling just like you expressed – like, “Are you kidding me?!!! W O R K O U T! GET MOVING!”

But, I am very sorry to say that as my job has changed and my workout schedule has dwindled, I show up at my workout times physically (after work) or mentally (before work) exhausted and I have become similar to the people that drove me crazy!!

I hope I can work my schedule out so I can get back to my workouts!

    Thanks for your insight!

Hi Yuri, I agree with people not making the most of their time on the elliptical. In fact it’s a pet peeve of mine when I can’t get a machine. However, if I crank up the the resistance, my thighs get huge, as I am naturally muscular. I just try to do more milage on low resistance, do you think that is a mistake?

Spinning with resistance? vs running and elipical
I did a spin class and i have never ever ever dripped sweat as this much, and i run in and out doors. The instructor said in her class a person will burn anywhere from 600 up to 800 calories depending on the spead and incline that is choosen. My body felt so fitigued and like i said i had never sweat as much. What is your take on that?

    • Yuri says:

Spinning can definitely be effective. Why? Because they make you work against resistance BIG TIME. If they had a spinning class for ellipticals, it would be the ultimate workout since it’s more full body.

    Yuri,
I’m starting a weight loss contest with my brother and 2 others on Sunday, Jan 22. it runs thru Easter Sunday, so about 11 weeks. Winner is the one who loses the highest % of original starting weight.

I’m 290 with a lot of back and shoulder pain. Strength training is doable, though probably not at first. Elliptical, treadmill and most cardio equipment is good. And I’d say after 2 weeks or so to get my body loosened up, I’d be willing to introduce weight or strength training.

What would you suggest in terms of a program. I’m willing to do 2 workouts per day, like 5am and 5pm (basically before and after work). I know straight cardio is not the answer, both from your blog and other newsletters. Certainly fat loss is the main goal.

My diet is actually good, ironically. I’m doing 3 very healthy shakes per day or maybe 2 shakes and a protein bar (I like Living Fuel products) and then a sensible meal in the evening which is usually a lean meat or organic eggs in a veggie stir fry using coconut or olive oil.

If one of your products would give me a good solution, just tell me which one.
